What is CrossFit Kids?

CrossFit Kids is a strength and conditioning program designed specifically to help kids and teenagers develop a love for health and fitness.

CrossFit classes are done in a group setting which helps to aid in developing social skills and team work as well as enabling them to work on their own.

Our program will teach your children new and fun movements while being educated on the importance of health and fitness. The workouts will help develop their motor patterns, movement and prepare them with well-rounded movement for their yearly years. The workouts are constantly varied and functional, which means the movements learned and practiced will have a carry over into their daily lives, directly or indirectly.

Using basic movements like pulling, pushing, jumping, running, throwing, lifting and climbing will all help keep the kids engaged and having fun. As they progress through the years and into the older age groups, the classes have more of an adult look to them. This is where we start to add more intensity to the classes with weight, speed and more advanced movements like the Olympic Weightlifting movements.

Regardless of age all of the children will work on all aspects of fitness: Strength, Power, Endurance, Stamina, Flexibility, Accuracy, Coordination, Agility, Balance and Speed.

There’s a saying that most adult CrossFitters say and that’s “I wish I’d of started CrossFit as a kid which is why we at CrossFit Braintree are extremely excited and proud to be able to offer our new CrossFit Kids classes allowing you to give your children a fantastic addition to their health!

What to expect…

A CrossFit Kids program is not a scaled adults program, don’t expect your child to be smashing a world record Clean and Jerk. Your child will not be lifting any weights until the Coach deems your child is ready and that loads added, will benefit your child. And there you have it, CrossFit Kids!

Be a part of CrossFit Kids Braintree Class!

We will be running three age groups for classes:

  • Preschool (ages 3-5)

  • Kids (ages 5-11)

  • Teens (ages 12-18)

Please note:  it is not the age of your child that is the deciding factor for what class he or she attends. It is largely based upon individual skill, athleticism, as well as maturity which is ultimately decided upon by the Head Coach to ensure your child is getting the most out of the CrossFit experience. Preschool classes will be 30 minutes long, Kids classes will be 30-45 minutes, and the Teens classes will be 45 minutes, these have a similar look and session plan to the adult classes.

Pre-school (3-5 years)


For this age group it’s all about FUN!  We are not overly worried about your child moving with perfect form, if your kids are anything like mine they move in all kinds of wonderful and weird ways and that is what we are aiming for, fun movement with games. Pre-school kids are still trying to get their body to move in ways that they want, our job as CrossFit Kids Coaches is to help them with that while associating exercise with fun and building skills and motor patterns for their future.

Kids (5-11 years)


Similar to the Pre-school kids, for our younger members it’s still about movement and fun. As they reach the older stage of this group we will be concentrating more on correct movement patterns. At this age your child doesn’t get stronger or faster by lifting weights, they develop speed and power by moving correctly and by recruiting more and more muscle fibres as they get better at moving their body.

Teens (11-17 years)


Everyone in this age group starts the same way, perfect the movement then we add load. Your child will not build muscle until they have been through puberty so there is no point in adding any weight until that happens. Even after that, every kid grows differently so don’t expect your child to be doing what other kids are doing. These classes take on a more disciplined approach; we need your child’s concentration. The motivation for you child will come from the new techniques learned and new skills gained. Please don’t expect your child to be coming to classes and lifting a world record lift, your child’s growth will be a controlled at a safe progression.
